The decor is plain and functional but the friendly staff and good hearty food are refreshing. Lunch time is best as it has an interesting local daily menu with a fish and a meat dish. Evening menu is more routine prices are reasonable Best local dish is Feiojada beans and meat
I stayed in a nearby Hospedaria Pôr do Sol, and came every morning for a simple breakfast, which consisted of five fried eggs cinco ovos fritos and an espresso or cafe com leite uma chinesa . Both the drinks and cafe were excellent, not overpriced, and the affable lady serving them gave good energies for the rest of the day, and moreover, she had also patience to listen me practicing my broken Portuguese. Which is not generally true in the more touristic areas of Funchal, where the service can be much colder . I only regret that I didn 't realize to come to this place also at some other time of day, for a full meal.
Out of the way local cafe which is a haunt for the local taxi drivers. Cafe on 2 floors with the upstairs being the better place to sit. Loads of regional food at very reasonable prices. Can recommend the tuna steak (served with a lemon sauce) and also the steak, topped with a fried egg. Chips are home made and delicious. A no frills cafe with good honest food and friendly, efficient staff.
