Bidra med feedbackBeen dreaming about their Black Bleu Burger. Haven't had one since pre pandemic. Don't stop too often in AG, but since I was here... Would it be the same?? Oh, yeah. Better, even, than I remembered, and huge. The flavor combo of the juicy beef, crumbled bleu cheese and thick, crispy bacon had me swooning. Paired it with a generous side of crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside sweet potato fries. Oh, and a lemon drop. Okay, two. All I need. Until next time. ;
Food was very good and service was excellent, but it was too cold in the restaurant to enjoy the meal.
I was a past winner of the Huge Burger Challenge AKA The Baron of Higuera Challenge . Since my review on Yelp in the past seems to gone missing [that is, if I ever did one , I will repost from an edited version from another platform. It is kind of a prelude of my upcoming review of the new Brooks Burgers in SLO-town, which was not huge [at 1/2 pounds of Wagyu beef , but excellent tasty. It was a belly busting feat which apparently is no longer on the menu at any of their current locations. I hope to visit again and see if I am still on the wall. I do have some pics a story to prove it . Ironically, I cannot find much on the internet about this, but did find an old Instagram post, pic, and this description The Baron Of Higuera Challenge!! If you can finish this behemoth of burger(including the fries in under an hour you will receive a limited edition FMC Baron of Higuera T-shirt and get your picture on the wall! [here is a better pic that really shows the true humungousness.... [hidden link . Apparently, after some searching many past food challenges became extinct awhile ago, but there used to be at least 7 in the Cal-Poly area, and this one was number 7. Here is the link: [hidden link It appears that most, if not all of the 7 food challenges, have become extinct...and most likely have become too expensive to do. It would be fun if one of the locations brought this back in some way. Here is the story: ... I am a honorary Winner of their Higuera Burger eating contest! Little did I suspect, that after doing some of my usual local shopping in AG Village, that I would be motivated to even attempt, let alone finish win this. The manager took a pic of me and placed it on the wall of honor . I also won a free T-shirt, saying Eat Me to boot... I just spontaneously decided while at the bar to try this, while both hungry quite sober (later I had one small bottle of Apple Cider . I did post a pic of the huge burger, but the pic does not seem to scale it right. It was really the size of the plate the full sized baked potato does look tiny next to it. Just the beef alone was 2 pounds! You need to eat all of the burger, the fixings, the potato, within a time limit. Despite the huge size, it was quite tasty, it was still enjoyable. I had no idea that they made such a huge bun. I even ate the decoration... then had a few scopes of ice-cream for desert for fun. It was my first successful eating contest...it seemed easy , but I was up till late digesting . It was a fun, but dumb idea, since I am not too young have tons of GI issues. Would I do it again...maybe : Anyway, the nice bartender, the manager, fellow customers were really cool cheered me on (see before after pics as posted . A few strangers even came by to shake my hand congratulate me after I was done. I was told that few people did complete this challenge, so that added to the fun. Needless to say, my wife thought that I was totally insane to do this, when I told her, after I came home. At first, she did not believe my story....but now there is a pic of me on the wall of honor...so proof positive. Other than the above, the Saloon was quite pleasant in every way I imagine that most would enjoy it here. The bar seemed to be mostly locals like me, but were a super-nice welcoming bunch. This place is off the beaten path, but is quite packed with locals in the know. It is well worth a visit far better than the other way more touristy steak houses in the area. .
The food was really good. Used to come here when we were kids. The drinks are amazing! Get the margarita! You won't be disappointed. Can't wait to go back. Great service too!
Sad shell of the pre COVID restaurant. Food was less than basic. Poor service and poor. Food prep. A table next to us even returned their ****** Mary's because they were not drinkable. Mclintocks needs a new manager to revamp the food and staff.
