Bidra med feedbackWe did 2 cooking classes with Patio Mexica in March and we loved it! The food was amazing and the tour of the Mercado was essential for us gringos, it opened up so much of Zihua to us. We shopped exclusively in the Mercado after the tour. Highly recommend doing these classes early in your trip! That way you can schedule a second or third later on : You do want to set up the times with them in advance because they fill up.
During our week in zihuatanejo, we booked this cooking school for one morning and had a great time! they took us out into the markets and led us throughout zihua downtown, and we got a taste of what life is like in the village, as well as some traditional ingredients that go into everyday cooking. we got to taste and smell things sold in the markets and shops, and returned back to the patio mexical to start cooking. one thing i would say is that if you are looking for a more hands-on do it yourself cooking class, this is not the right place for you, but if you are looking for the experience and tasting, i would definitely recommend it. monica mostly taught in the form of a demonstration, but we got to chop some things while she talked. all the food she made was amazing, and we got to try chilaquiles, enchiladas, both green and red salsa, and 2 types of tortilla soup. there were not many options for my vegetarian friends, and though she had to omit meat in a few plates, it seemed like an inconvenience for her. overall great experience, and a recipe souvenier to keep!
A class with Monica has become a holiday tradition. I've happily made and eaten fish tacos, ceviche and tiritas, salsas y tortillas, rice and frijoles, and my favorite, Molé. Instruction is in English. You get to be hands on but no one is going to be upset if you pass. The walk to the nearby Farmers Market is photogenic and very informative. Quite reasonable cost for time and quality given. A booklet of recipes and context is provided.
A very nice experience during my Zihuatenejo vacation. Monica is a lovely lady and she is very passionate for cooking and very friendly. Food cooked was delicious, cost of the class was very fair (approx $25 pp) and tour of the shops and farmers market very interesting and with a few tastings too. By the way, she paid for all the tastings which is a kindness bonus, considering the fairness of her cooking class price. Hand on was on salsa and hand made tortillas. A cool idea she had is to put mirrors above her stove, so we could see exactly what she was doing without needing to stand. The group was of 7 in total, perfect. Her assistant is a very nice lady too. A lovely experience, I will be happy to do it again next time!
