Heartwood Community Cafe

This local restaurant unfortunately is closing. We had a Groupon and we were glad we made it before the closing. Service was good and helpful. We shared a macaroni and cheese and a appetizers platter of bean burgers, nachos, and perogies. All tasty.

We specifically visited the Heartwood Community Cafe because we wished to support their efforts. We both started with soups followed by a grill cheese and BLT. It was a pleasant experience and the prices while not modest were within range.

Cozy and very kid friendly! I went here for the first time a couple months agos with my toddler and was so relieved to see the little play are along one of the walls next to some seating area. My two year old saw it too and quickly hopped over there to check out the cute miniature kitchen play area. The menu was small. I believe it was just their weekend brunch menu, so I'm curious what they offer during the week. I ordered the veggie burger with roared root vegetables on the side. The vegetable burger is very yummy and made in house. In general, the service is good. My server happily catered to my daughter with a plastic drinking cup and a booster seat. I found the waiting time to get my bill a bit slow but there were several people waiting to pay, tables were full of people...it got busier even as I began eating my lunch and I could easily see how the servers were really doing their best! I went back the next week and tried the gluten free pancakes, also delicious but unfortunately had the same experience with paying for the bill. Because this cafe is in my neighbourhood, is very child friendly and offers yummy veggie and gluten free food I'd go back without a question. I do wish they would change up their menus though or offer a couple more brunch options on the weekend.

Heartwood Community Café is a community living room, and social justice gathering place. The food is prepared with LOVE, i.e. Locally-sourced, Organic, Vegan & Vegetarian Options and Environmentally Sustainable. Soup for the People welcomes people to the table for a donation. The café is located in a funky old building with tin ceilings, boasts a shabby-chic décor and rotates justice-focused art on the walls. Community events are regularly scheduled Thursday through Saturday evenings and are posted on the website.

Used to go to this location regularily when it was the Rhizome (must admit this is our first visit since the Rhizome owners departed (2 years ago). I wish now we hadn't stayed away so long. Open for lunch daily except Mondays and brunch on Saturday/Sunday. Open late for special events.Ordered the Cheese Sandwhich (smoked cheddar ((not too smokey)) plus monterey jack and cheddar on a thick cut sourdough. Second order was the Turkey Pesto (roast turkey ((like real turkey)), pumpkin seed pesto, tomato, pepper mayo on a thick sliced multigrain bread. Both came with a big salad (mixed greens, cucumber, shredded carrot and beet. The sandwiches were big and delicious. We also each had a glass of white wine for a very reasonable price ($6).We will be back for lunch and looking forward to weekend brunch.Great service, nice table layout, credit cards accepted.
