We went in for some brunch. Unfortunately the service and food were very disappointing. I had the farmers breakfasts. 2 eggs, sausage, home fries, and toast. And I ordered the bottomless mimosa. Food Service: There 's nothing special about the meal. I thought it would be a somewhat hearty plate but was disappointed to see a big plate with less than a quarter of it full. I wish I was making this up, as I got no more than 1/4 of a cup of home fries. A sausage patty that was smaller than what you would get at McDonald 's, and poached eggs that weren 't poached... But hard boiled. I had to order an extra side of home fries. As for the bottomless mimosa. I only saw my server three times. The first, 20 minutes after we had been seated. The second, 15 minutes later as he brought back water. And lastly, when he took our order. We never got a check in, refill on waters, or asked if we wanted more drinks. So I spent $15 on bottomless mimosas and only ended up getting two (I had to ask another server for a mimosa). The duration of my experience here lasted nearly two hours. Most of which was waiting to be attended and waiting for the check. I tend to be lenient when it comes to dining experiences. One, because I 'm in the food industry myself, and two because no restaurant should be judged off of one experience. I will say, I made a reservation ahead of time and the restaurant itself was not full. If I had not made those observations I wouldn 't have written a review.
Upon arrival of our reservation we waited at the host stand for a few minutes because the hostess was busy watching police cars chasing someone. Once seated I ordered a glass of the unoaked chardonnay they had on their list, it was out of stock. We tried ordering the fried green tomatoes with pork belly, once again they were out of pork belly. Of the food we did get: crayfish hushpuppies were unremarkable, the caramelized brussles sprouts salad tasted like it was deep fried, the arugula salad was good, the striped bass/rockfish lacked any salt or pepper and was bland, the trout dish was actually well prepared and tasty. Not sure how their desserts are as we were not offered any, and had to ask for coffee after our unengaged server tried dropping off our check. All in all pretty disappointing, there entire menu appears to be ripped off from Sean Brocks cookbook, I've eaten at his restaurant Husk in Nashville, that was top notch start to finish, Far from the experience at the Chesapeake Room
They have reopened after renovation. Overpriced, pretentious, and underwhelming. The menu descriptions don't add up. I think they need an identity, Southern cuisine with fox hunting wall size painting and an aquarium?? We started out with deviled eggs and cornbread, very good. What killed it for us was the 29.00 steak with cherry tomatoes, rolled zucchini stripes and a tasteless BBQ sauce. The food presented did not carry the description on the menu. For a 29.00 steak I will stick with Ray's. Almost 200 for 4 people, if they want repeat (weekly) visitors they need to do some work on the menu/ . Not sure if they want to be a neighborhood spot or a special event destination. The chef needs to work on getting meat temperatures correct. Plating was pretty but overpriced for the amount of food. Wait staff were pleasant and accommodating but seemed unsure of each other roles. Dessert options were chocolate chip cookies...that's it. We will not be back. Thought we could find a new neighborhood spot past the hot spots on Barracks Row. We will keep looking.
Awful. Read about this as one of the top 10 brunch spots in DC. It took 60 minutes for our food to arrive. When it did, the garnish wasn't there on two dishes. The coffee was not hot. I asked for another hot cup- second cup not not either. The food was ok, but the experience was not!
