Bidra med feedbackWell, the quality of mexican food in Hampton Roads is not very good. I have been searching forever for exceptional food.....the search continues. The waiter was polite but understood very little english. The place was clean but sparce. The chips were heavy and the salsa was watery and salty. The entrees were okay...but forgetable. The chili poblano/relleno was made improperly and with the wrong pepper. The burrito was just a bigger enchilada....same sauce, same everything. The refried beans were the best item! I just dont understand why its so hard to find QUALITY mexican food. My search continues...
Authentic Mexican. Service can be bit slow but food comes out fast. Food is great. Just what you would get in California. Lots of regulars (large families) in restaurant- I guess folks know what is good.
This restaurant has changed its name to El Portrillo or something like that. Either way, it is NOT the same neighborhood San Jose that we have been accustomed to. The service is horrible! After ten minutes of just sitting there, our drink orders were finally taken. After the food was finally served, we asked for to go containers. The rude ass waiter just tossed the styrofoam to go container on top of our food. Then fast forward another 17 minutes of just waiting for our check- I finally just got up and went to the register with no bill. I mean man- I get that everyone may have a bad day but don't treat your customers like that. The food was ok. The chips tasted stale and old. Nothing to rave about. It's just the service was ridiculously crappy. Also, I notice that my receipt does not reflect the name of the restaurant. It says Chapala Inc. What's up with that? I can't wait until the new name is reflected on Yelp so I can copy and paste this again. Get it together new owner and management.
I'm sorry i have to leave a poor review during covid 19 but the food is just bad...We have a favorite place for mexican food but we wanted to try a new place. I don't know why they have such a high raiting. I won't go into too many details about the food because it was just bad overall. That ground beef in the taco and burrito looked and tasted wierd, never seen this kind of meat used in mexican cuisine. Food didn't seem fresh. The chicken quesadilla was edible. Horchata is watery and margarita too strong sour and spicy (jalapeno margarita), left it there after one sip. Didn't want to complain to the waiter as we didn't want to make his job harder than it is plus wouldn't make a difference in the way everything was. The reviews are either not real or people just have very low standards for mexican food...
No matter what, the free chips, salsa, and white sauce always gets me I 've gone here more than a handful of times in my time here in the Virginia Beach area and have not been disappointed. From the authentic tacos (i usually choose lengua and asada to the tamales made with either pork or chicken depending on the day the food here will fill you up in quantity and flavor. If you opt for the tamales be sure to get the red rojo sauce if you don 't want it too spicy or go for the green verse sauce if you want the extra heat! The tamale itself has a good balance of masa and filling and tastes like it was cooked in a chicken stock for more amplified flavor. My recent go to has been the Super Chimichangas (2 fried small burritos with shredded beef topped with cheese and served with rice and beans and lettuce tomato and guacamole topping (definitely gutbuster status! If you 're looking for a good hearty Mexican meal to get you filled up and ready for a place on the couch, then don 't pass this p
