Jerry's Ice House - Troutdale

I feel like I really stayed on an armhouse. For as much money as the average screen owner spends, I think that the property could afford to update the bed options unless...dreadable sheets, flat (and only 2) pillows, scratchy thin blankets, and lumpy hard beds are part of the experience. But I love the atmosphere of McMenamin's properties and enjoy carnivals like atmosphere. The best part of the stay was the outdoor pool lazy river style....simply magical at night. Book spa treatments well in advance as they book quickly.

The food was good outside among the heaters and open fires. Art in halls very eclectic. Nice place!

Over an hour reviewing my bill I found 3 major errors confirmed by my bank: 1. Without notice or authorization, all but the last day was already charged to my card, supposedly. 2. The card charged was actually that of another guest with a very Anglo name vs. my very Hispanic name. 3. The holds they had placed on my card, above charges, were 150% of what they told me. Each mistake was about $1, 000. To add insult to injury, after over an hour of trying to resolve these obvious errors the manager, who finally emerged, directed me not to deal with her staff anymore since my unilaterally uncovering error after error made them uncomfortable. I had remained calm, kind, and respectful since this was not their fault but that of McMenamins faulty policies and systems to which they could only reference. Over years, my family visited frequently, including paying for 3 weddings. Shame we won’t be back.

We have begun staying in McMenamin's hotels for fun, just to compare them, and Edgefield wins so far. The place is huge. You should come early and stay late. Our room was small and comfortable and we don't mind bathrooms down the hall, especially when robes are provided and all the guests were so friendly. Do bring shower shoes. There is wifi but no TV and we did not miss it. We parked next to one of the vineyards, and explored other gardens especially loved the large vegetable garden, watched glassblowing, took the brewery, distillery, and winery tours, and the history tour. Saw a freaking awesome concert on the lawn. We went to the soaking pool which is beautiful and inviting. A chance encounter with an employee who spotted us on tippie toes looking through a window of Blackberry Hall opened the door for us and let us explore while he worked in there. Not golfers, but the golf course is well cared for. We found the Jerry Garcia statue and the onion dome and chatted with a man working hard over barrels of wine. We wondered at vines growing up the fabulous water tower with sunflowers at its base. We explored ceramic art in the former morgue, enjoyed the always engaging art hanging on the walls, or painted directly onto the walls, or on the pipes, or in sculpture. Even though we bought wine in the Little Red Shed, stopped to cool off in the Black Rabbit House, lunched at the Power Station Pub, imbibed a pint at Jerry's Ice House and the Distillery Bar, stopped in at the Tea House, had a quick salad at The Black Rabbit restaurant, we didn't see it all. We didn't play pool at the pool hall and there's a theatre too? Not enough time! We will be back.
