Fryer Tuck - St Kilda

This was an interesting experience, I am approaching this review as an experience rather just a fish and chip shop. Location - very easy access but although parking the car was fine on a Wednesday lunchtime in June, I suggest a tram when it gets warmer.The gentleman behind the counter (a Londoner) was a happy fellow and helpful. I had (of course) cod and chips. Real malt vinegar and salt on hand. The meal size for me was ample. The fish was crispy on the outside and succulent inside, just right. However I thought the chips let it down, very light in colour, they were cooked, so no issue there, tasted ok. To me they just did not look appetising I was expecting golden crispy chips and fluffy inside. I would like to say this would not put me off returning. It could have been a particular batch of chips, the oil or some other issue. I also had the mushy peas very good too. As I say it all tasted good. Price wise I thought it was a bit steep however I guess I have to factor in the cost of importing the fish from Icelantic waters. Overall a pleasant experience.

True English fish and chips. Perfect and I will definitely be coming back. Better than most chips shops back in the UK.

The restaurant turned out to be smaller than we expected, mainly offering a takeout service. The service was a bit slow, which might have irritated us if we were getting takeout. However, the wait was worth it as the cod and haddock were fantastic. Our friend had mushy peas (a bit runny) and curry gravy (excellent). I also tried a pickled egg, which seemed freshly dropped in vinegar that morning. The chips seemed overcooked and stale, as if they had been sitting out for too long. I would consider returning, but only for the fish.

For an ex-pat pom who loves Australia but misses 'real' fish and chips, this is like a little bit of heaven. I'd like to write a log detailed review but honestly, what would be the point? All I need to say is 'Perfect'

If you've been away from home and miss 'proper' fish and chips make sure to call into this place. They have proper thick cut chips and the fish is good! Great service too!!
