Cristallo - PATERNO

....and found a pleasant surprise, as we had not even planned to stop in Paternò and rerouted to have a bite to eat. We approached this restaurant because it looked shiny and clean and modern. Not surprisingly, the vegetarian availability was next to nil, but the affability of our bartender made up for it and in the end we found something that did not contain prosciutto.. : .. it was that way that we discovered two local specialties in the constellation of Sicilian sweets: the raviola di ricotta and iris al cioccolato . The raviola was good: a flaky triangle of pastry dough wrapping a tasty ricotta filling, but did not come close to the iris: a half loaf of perfectly fried dough filled with a cinnamon lightly flavored chocolate custard: not the lightest but phenomenal nonetheless. This pastry shop/bar alone is an excellent reason to stop and visit Paterno.

This is our favorite bar in Paternò. Paterno is known for having many many coffee bars and this is a star. Clean, good service, full seating area, good menu. Their savory pastries with pistachio are fabulous. Seriously. But so are all their offerings. Good location. Fun to people-watch.
