Barretao - Olhão

We had been recommended this restaurant by locals and were welcomed in with open arms. Our table service was excellent but the management poor. We waited 1 hour for our food to arrive, small children were very hungry and impatient and so were the adults. We nearly left without paying. Once this was threatened, treated like celebrities. A real shame that the poor management overshadows the excellent food.. once it arrived.

Barretao Portuguese cuisine under the direction of the popular chef, is gorgeous here, Come here for perfectly cooked monkfish, churnesco and fried fish if you are hungry, Do not go away with out degusting good portrait. What should have been a nice evening out turned out not to be, this is not our first time here but will definitely be our last time, given that restaurants are meant to super clean hygienic Due to COVID-19 seeing a RAT running behind the air con unit inside the restaurant by the kitchens while we were eating our meal doesn’t say hygienic to me, also staff where rude not listening to what we were ordering even though we ordered in Portuguese It was like they couldn’t be bothered, such a shame as last time we were here we had a lovely time throughly enjoyed ourselves.

We tried this restaurant as we saw many locals in it. Great dinner. Grilled fish with some nice deserts at the end. Kids loved it. Sangria was great. Service good.great value.

We had dinner there on our last evening in Olhao and it was really not what we expected. We had seen loads of locals going there during all our stay so we thought we might give it a try and unfortunately it was all very disappointing! We ordered a grilled bream and came very small and was clearly not fresh with a strong fish smell I know fish does have a smell but it's not supposed to be that strong after you clean, season and grill it. I have had plenty of fish in Portugal and none had that smell . I couldn't eat it. My sister had a seabass and it was fine. We also wanted to taste the meat, it was tasty and soft good considering the price but the slices of meat were really thin! The side dishes came a very long time after we got our meat and fish, so we waited and waited a lot.The fries were super good! the beans and rice also but we got a small bowl or rice and a small bowl of beans for 2. We ordered some more, it never came, we got fed up and left. We also had a white sangria, so so good! Another negative was that there were 3 guys near us that were pissed off at the fact that we were tourists eating at the restaurant. They kept looking at our phones and wallets, plus they were often pulling a knife that they had on them. Really weird situation! It was of course not the fault of the restaurant but it did not help us to appreciate the experience. We will probably come back and choose other dishes because we still believe that this restaurant can be good considering the amount of people going there. Maybe it was a bad day for us, plus we don't speak Portuguese unfortunately so it apparently didn't help. Our waiter who spoke perfect English was really nice and helpful though, only that he was super busy apparently.
