The meat was tender and the pork skin was really crispy. It was oily though, but that was to be expected. The sauce was nothing special. What really got me was the serving size, which was more than enough for 1 person. I was surprised because many of the food choices in The Grid had a small serving size. I recommend to try this!
Meat was dry. lechon sauce was good but the other mayo based sauce didn't match the food well. maybe for the eggplant? the ala carte and the set menu price differ only by Php20 so best get the set menu one with the brown rice (which doesn't help the dryness of the whole dish either).
Happy Ongpauco's Filipino concept stall of Le Chon goes with unique and modern elements. They provide you individualized aluminum plates of your own meal combination. It has your choice of rice, meat, sauces, and sides. It starts at Php 299. I got to try their Lechon Gourmet Manok on Tanglad Butter with Grilled Talong Baba Ganoush style, Sexy Brown Rice and Labuyo Lime Adobo White Sauce as its dips. Overall it was a decent order. It could've been better if the meat was seasoned well and ample in serving portion. Personally, I'm okay to pay additional as long as there is more of what's important. I also got a side of Bananacue Chips and Sweet Potato Fries. Both were nice additions to the set.
Le Chon is one of the top billers in this new and popular food hall The Grid at Powerplant Mall. The concept is not new in the US but is still at the early stage of development in the Philippines (despite the Hole in the Wall popularity years back). Frankly, the prices of food in The Grid are very steep and dining in this 0artially self service place can turn out to be much more expensive than when done in other popular restaurants at Rockwell. Coke in can is 75 pesos and coffee is 200 pesos. Price of decent meal for 1 person can range from 350 to 600 excluding drinks. Of you want a meal and a drink, be prepared to pay around 700 pesos and add around 400 pesos more for coffee and dessert. Le Chon is no exception to their steep pricing. The USDA beef belly with buttered rice and a side dish and lime chili sauce is good. It is a comfort food at its best. However, I have tried other lechon beef belly in the Metro with much bigger serving and for a more reasonable price. Le Chon's beef belly is good but not great and for 495 pesos plus VAT, it simply doesn't make the cut for a 520 pesos self serviced meal. The serving is generous on rice but not on the melt in your mouth beef. Even with a side dish, the beef is just enough to consume half of the rice that comes with it. The buttery rice is a perfect match to the beef though. The eggplant side dish is nothing extraordinary. The chili oil lacks the kick and the liver sauce needs improvement. Good thing the beef belly is flavorful enough to be eaten as it is. Too bad, though, for more than 500 pesos a plate, not a piece of crispy skin is included in the serving. Same goes with their pork porchetta. They replace the quintessential crispy roasted pork skin with a piece of deep fried chicharon! I hope they improve the serving size of their meat and add the real deal crispy skin on it. Only then can we say, it is worth the hype and the price.
I'm not a big fan of lechon but I really loved their porchetta and angus beef. Both were very delicious. They also have various sides to choose from. It's interesting how all the flavors worked well together. I will definitely come back here.
