To my surprise the selections of Gelato were limited and the service was poor. I finally got to eat my ice cream but oh my! I found a hair on it. Sadly, they did replace it, however, my appetite obviously changed.
Without a doubt the best gelato I've had outside of Italy (and even better than many in Italy). The gelato is fresh and made in-store. I make a point to stop in every time I'm in the Toronto area. The location, staff and facilities are all top-notch. I can't recommend this place enough!
This is where we go whenever we need a gelato fix. It used to be Amici but when new owners took over in 2014 it became Port 1 Cafe. We went on an unusually warm Tue afternoon in mid-Oct. Aside from us, there were only 2 other customers inside the cafe. The owner, who was busy preparing their food order, told us he would be with us shortly, so while we waited we chose our gelato flavours and looked around the cafe. Aside from gelato and coffee, Port 1 Cafe offers crepes, grilled sandwiches, meat pies, pizza, soup and more. We only come here for gelato so we cannot comment on the food. There were only 7 flavours to choose from during our last visit, likely because it was already fall season, and sadly no pistacchio in sight. The owner pointed out to me later that pistacchio was in 1 of the 1L takeout trays for sale that day and that the gelato was good for freezing up to 6 months. I doubt it would last that long at home, it would most likely be eaten up in a matter of days, but it was good to know.Despite the limited selection, we each decided to get a Medium 2-flavour cup ($4.95). My husband and I were willing to try new flavours while our son asked for a pumpkin pie sample first before he made his decision. That done, our final choices were green apple & peach/ice tea, green apple & banana and cioccolato & pumpkin pie. As we paid for our orders, I noticed their loyalty card display on the counter so I asked for one. It allows the cardholder to get a signature for every gelato or coffee purchase – buy 8 and get the 9th free (regular size). This promotion has no expiry date.We ate our gelato at a 3-seater table while we occasionally glanced at the live Blue Jays game shown on the cafe’s flat screen TV. The gelato was yummy, the flavours intense in every melt-in-your-mouth spoonful. Every time I eat gelato I am always reminded why I prefer it to ice cream. Port 1 Cafe has a pleasant ambience and customers have several seating options to choose from. Aside from the regular tables and chairs, there are a couple of round tables with bar stools and a pair of low red sofa chairs flanking a square coffee table. The place can seat around 17 people. Washroom located at the back.
Beautiful area and building. Was disappointed with the snacks: gelato was too sweet & rum balls were dry
This gelato rivals what we ate in Florence this spring. So full of flavour and fabulous texture. It was a true treat that wasn't hundreds of calories.
