Continuing our search for anything resembling good Mexican or TexMex, we ventured south of the border (the Castle Rock border, that is) to Larkspur. A few different people had recommended Charrito's House, so we gave it a try. The 3.5 star average is pretty accurate. First, the little house and somewhat dated, rustic setting is kind of neat. We were greeted and seated promptly. The menu is huge, and a lot looks good. I ordered the combination fajitas, and my daughter had the shredded beef enchiladas. Chips and salsa are both quite good. Salsa has a nice flavor with a bit of a bite at the end. Be aware, the first bowl of chips is free. After that, they'll charge $2.50/bowl and not tell you unless you ask. We saw that in the menu, but they're pretty quick to ask if you want more chips (of course we do, but not if we're paying for them). Food came out after a bit of a wait, but nothing too long. Unlike most other places, the fajitas were actually sizzling, so that's something. There wasn't a ton of meat, and what was there was kind of scrawny; however, both the steak and chicken had good taste, and combined with the peppers, onions, homemade Guac, condiments, and rice and beans (which were both fine), I had plenty of food. Of course, I took a pic of the sides but somehow forgot the fajitas. How did I do that?!? They'll also charge for substitutions. Even though I held the sour cream and other things, they charged $1.50 for an extra dollop of Guac. My daughter thought the enchiladas were ok. Not the best or worst she's ever had. I'm guessing she'd try something else if we decide to come back. We split an order of sopapillas for dessert. They were cooked perfectly and had great flavor, other than the strong amount of salt. Not sure if something was messed up in the batter or what should've been sugar and cinnamon, but they were quite salty. I guess mixed with the other flavors and honey, it wasn't THAT bad. We did eat them after all. Service was ok. Definitely not rushed. We had to ask for refills a few times, but overall, it was fine. So in the end, another 3.5 star experience. I'd come back if we were in Larkspur and hungry, but we probably wouldn't rush back down from Castle Rock with so many other options nearby.
We stopped here one time while in Larkspur. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. Definitely would drive to Monument and eat at La Casa Fiesta instead.
Bad service rude people overpriced Margaritas They charged $18 and had hardly any tequila.
Love the service and food. The Mole is so good. The nachos are the perfect snack. Enchiladas are my favorite.
