Bidra med feedbackSal's was the best restaurant in Helena; it took a while for the locals to adopt Trattoria style dining, but once that occurred you could count on Montana sized portions of the best Italian in the Rockies. The atmosphere was amazing with murals of Italian streets providing a glimpse into Sal's boyhood city. Sadly this treasured gem closed in 2004. It has been replaced by the good Mediterranean Grill, (the pizzas are excellent).
I regret not posting this earlier, because timothy deserves recognition. helena is not traditionally known for its food scene. the few unique restaurants that open up tend to close within a year or so. this place is an exception and a bit an institution. a bit on the expensive side for helena, but not too bad to most other cities. we were there two hours and it felt like an hour. the experience was so pleasant that the time had flown (although I also thank my company for it). we sat fast and greeted by tim. his service rivaled what I get in fine restaurants throughout the country. the courses were well-lasted and he offered great drinks pairing suggestions. our food was excellent. the pasta was the favorite on our table. we're coming back!
Great eating and friendly staff! they allow reservations. we are not used for Mediterranean food, but have both loved meals. the lens soup and sweet soup were good. the broth that comes with them was also made fresh. the gyro sandwich was really good with a fresh side salad and the Egyptian chicken sandwich was also good!
If they want to go to helena and a delicious meal and a impeccable weeping list, it would be a tragic to not visit the meditarranean grill. I came in the middle of a winter snowstorm and was not immediately blown away from the inset or one of the above beams. Once I opened the menu and the wine list, I was pleasantly surprised. the owner must be an enjoyer of the kind as the wee were extensive, and the baked pasta and veal romana were absolutely delicious. as new to helena our waitress humorous our excited chatter about moving in a snowstorm, and the second we moved a plate on the side that she was to replace it. the rest and relaxation with the vino was very necessary at the end of the day. I could see why she said that the place in the warmer summer months is much more busy, but it made my night after a day of work. Thanks for the great service and attention, as well as the beautiful food.
This place is the best Mediterranean/Italian I've experienced in Montana. I love it and its my go to while visiting Helena. The stuffed grape leaves are as good, or better than being in Greece. Nothing on the menu is a poor choice. All is wonderful and full of flavor. The aroma of the place is intoxicating. Exceptional service and a story book type atmosphere. Like stepping out of Helena into a Mediterranean kitchen on a back street of Athens.
