My husband and I had dinner at the restaurant yesterday. They have some farm to table items. Farm to restaurant Vidalia Onion Rings were delicious. I went on to have farm to restaurant fried chicken and it was very good! My husband had shrimp, he said they were not fresh but quickly commented that he did not expect them to be fresh because he did not see a shrimp boat when he arrived: He ate every one of them so that had to be tasty. The serving sizes were good (new twist on cheese grits . The sides were good. Meals came with soup and salad. Salad bar was basic, items were fresh! Waitress was pleasant and attentive. Chef is young and aspiring. Don't expect the best food you ever tasted but a good and wholesome meal and you can't go wrong. The dining room is spectacular if you have ever cut and hammered a 2x4. It took several folks to get those beams in place. . Price was excellent. $25. for two meals, soft beverages, and an appetizer.
My wife and I stopped there on Mother's Day on our way from Atlanta to Jax. We got there just before closing time of the Mother's Day buffet. The Grill is part of the lodge of this state park which seems to be primarily devoted to golf. It's a nice room with nice views of the course. The buffet was about what you'd expect...OK, not great. But one doesn't usually go to buffets expecting to get the best meal one has ever experienced, does one? It was $15, a bit expensive, but I'm guessing the spread was bigger than usual for Mother's Day. The service was friendly and efficient. There aren't a lot of alternatives around McCrae for travelers as far as I can tell. You can get an OK meal here that will fill you up and send you on your way. Have some realistic expectations about the quality of the food (not great but not bad) and you'll be happy.
