Bidra med feedbackThere is a choice between canto chinese and canadian/american chinese. I tried the canto menu. Ask the server, who would know if you express your interest in 'real chinese' food. It is a full scale resto (12 tables for 4), in a mall next to a home depot, so could be misleading from the outside. Decor is typical can-chin cafeteria. Owner is the chef.Service only helpful if you ask and they are not busy, so expect the usual chin-can resto service.Prices are quite reasonable, but portions not large and content not high. The stewed beef brisket not served in a hot pot and without tofu or bak choi. Only napa cabbage. Fried rice ok. Shrimp with lobster sauce, low on shrimp and had chicken in the sauce, not minced pork.Might return to try other canto dishes. Guelph is not high on the culinary hit list. Lots of locals on a thursday night (8 others persons). Ray's is next.Open till 10 most nights and accepts credit cards. Did not try the booze. $20 pp for dinner.
I ordered from this place being excited by the idea of them having a chef's special Tom Yum soup. I ordered the soup and a classic chicken pad thai. I guess this was my downfall. Don't order Thai from a Chinese place. I got home to find the soup littered with "tofu" that smelled like weird cheese and the broth had no semblance of lemongrass whatsoever. The pad thai was basically just greasy sesame, no sweet, no sour. I mustered some courage to eat some of the pad thai, only to find what can only be described as a whisker, a quarter way through my bowl. I am throwing out all the food. Really disappointed and grossed out. Check out the chinese place near the University of Guelph in the No Frills plaza. They're somewhat decent. Avoid this place!
Its right around the corner and great in a pinch or on a lazy day. Its always reliable, never overly busy in the dining room but always busy for takeout. The servers are efficient and polite, the food is average but plentiful, the dinig room could use a refresh but its always tidy, my only gripe here is the prices are getting a little high. I'll be back for sure, just not as often as I would be if was a little easier on the pocketbook.
We only order from Happy Garden when the taste for Chinese food hits us! Ordering is simple, from an extensive and pleasing menu. The owners and chefs are delightful and eager to please. Would eat in as the atmosphere is very inviting. Sensitive to likes and dislikes. Allergies too. Recommend highly. On the list to do very soon, again.
I ordered ahead of time to pick up some food for myself and a co-worker to eat on our lunch. There was only one table with people eating (and it was lunch time). I took the food back to the office. The lady who had my food all ready to go is super friendly and nice but unfortunately the food is terrible. We literally only had 3 bites of the rice and couldn't even try the chicken balls due to the size and unappealing nature. They were tennis ball sized and all batter. The chow mein wasn't great either. Hopefully others have had a better experience.
