Cookai Japanese - Governors Bay

I used to love Cookai so was pretty excited to check out the new spot in the crossing! Unfortunately Cookai just isn’t the same anymore. The first thing we noticed were the lights were suuuuuuper bright (not a big deal but some ambience is a bit nice when you’re having dinner). The food wasn’t great, the staff were hard to engage with, and it was very expensive for what we got. We were actually shocked at how much it was when we went to pay. Definitely wouldn’t go back. Bring back the OG Cookai!!!!

Came in today thought give a go for a new sushi train restaurant in the Crossings in town. We had tonkotsu (pork) ramen and unagi (eel) Donburi and some sushi from the train. They are all bad. Anyone can tell that those sushi on the train were probably sitting there for more than 2 hours and sushi rice were very dry and also not seemed to cook properly as well. Fish were tuna and salmon I had but they were dry as well even though they had cover on them! Also I’ve asked what the “Cookai lager” was made from and the server just said “it’s beer.” That wasn’t what I wanted to know I know it’s bloody beer. But unfortunately she had bit of broken English so I just gave up asking further. Tonkotsu ramen it said pork broth ramen soup but tasted 90% soy sauce based, and also tasted like just making the ramen from instant noodles like Maggie brand. Very disappointed that was $14.50. Unagi Donburi was very average and probably the eel was made from frozen? Very chewy can’t taste any freshness. Will definitely not recommend to anyone that I know. As I myself am being Japanese and there are only few options to choose which one is must go from, and don’t want my friends to experience such a huge let down from “made from fresh to order” restaurant. What a joke seriously.

Wow! Cookai has moved to the Crossing and boasts a huge sushi train! Returning to the city to continue it's legacy in Christchurch. Full bar, amazing cocktails. Fresh hand made sushi by esteemed chefs.

Was really looking forward to having dinner here last night only to turn up at 730pm and told we would have to be out by 8pm!! It’s crazy to me that you can close during the time most people are wanting to enjoy dinner.
