Mercantil Snack - Funchal

This little cafe is situated down a narrow pedestrianised street in the centre of Funchal. We were looking for a light lunch and like to go where the local people eat. The proprietor was very welcoming and the menu included a good range of sandwiches as well as soup and other specials. We both chose the steak sandwich, which was very nicely seasoned. The food is very reasonably priced and was excellent value. The cafe is very clean and has a nice atmosphere inside, as well as pavement tables.

John. the owner of Mercantil Snack bar always gives a very warm welcome and is very attentive to the customers needs. Every lunchtime there are two local dishes on the menu plus his soup. If you are wanting something else there is a comprehensive snack menu. A great place to visit we have been going every year for the last 10 years.

There's something nice about this little cafe. Definitely not fancy dining, but it serves traditional and interesting Portugese food as well as the usual sandwiches etc. The owner speaks good English and is very helpful, allowing you to taste before you order. The food is good soup is 2euros. Outwith the main menu there are specials each day. From the specials menu a main course is 4.50euros for a smaller portion and 5.50euros for a norrmal sized portion. Enjoy sharing food with locals having their lunch break knowing that you can sit as long as you like. It's very good value for lunch and a different experience from the more up market dining establishments you may choose for dinner . It is situated, like many other cafes, in the street, with inside and outside tables. It's closed at the weekend.
