Drove up this route to take a look at the top of the mountain above Funchal. This restaurant looked ideal to look out over the valley, and it was! The staff were unbelievably friendly, we stopped for a coffee and enjoyed the views and we were so intrigued by the chef and the bbq setup, that we returned for dinner that night (I even gave up drinking in order to drive there again). It was worth it. The manager set us up with our own personal fire right next to the table. I am quite a discerning customer and he had no problem when I asked to see the steaks or other cuts they offered and the chef was more than happy to showcase their cooking techniques. It all added to the theatre and intrigue of what was a very simple and traditional restaurant. To start with we went for baby squid, which were probably the best squid we have ever had. The lemon glaze they used was garlicy, rich and addictive. The steak on the spit was epic, cooked perfectly and with a unique flavour I haven’t found anywhere else. We also had the ribs which were just as special. Thoroughly impressed with the simple but effective cooking methods they employed with their bbq. Just mesmerising, everything they serve is touched by fire, and has a wonderful taste. Will definitely be back. The waiter after we said no thanks to pudding brought us one anyway and said it’s on the house for you to try. It was again simple (chocolate cake and set custard in a glass) but the flavour was awesome, didn’t even know we wanted it but we did! A must visit.

Restaurant très chaleureux! La viande au feu de bois y est délicieuse. Nous avons pris l’apéro sur la terrasse qui offre une superbe vue Mer/forêt. L’accueil très sympa et le prix tout à fait abordable au vue de la qualité de la viande.

Hires car from Funchal for €10 and 20 minutes later you are in and unbelievable paradise. Fantastic freshly grilled meats in a stupendous setting. Breathtaking views across the treetops you will not be disappointed and extremely reasonable priced too.
