Bidra med feedbackI will say the service was a little slow even though there weren't too many customers at the time. However, they were very friendly and answered all my questions. They has a nice vegetarian and vegan selection. As a vegan, I was impressed. There are not a lot of places around here that have a good amount of selection for me. I had the falafel salad. It has this delicious pickled concoction on it. It was pickled cucumbers, carrots, cabbage and not sure what else. But it was soooooo good. And yes, it was more dill and not sweet. We also had hummus and Baba ghanoush. Both were delicious and also vegan. We also ordered a few rice stuffed peppers for the table that is vegan and we all enjoyed those as well. For a drink, I had their pomegranate iced tea, and it was very good, not very sweet and not sour. I was happy to hear they had one vegan dessert. They were these nut cookies. Not the best thing I've ever tasted but they were good. They had a big selection of desserts and salads and such that you could take home. I forgot to mention their beet salad. It is pickled as well and very good. I am a huge beet fan. Not bad for prices also, just over 100 for 4 people including a few desserts and snacks. I think I've been thorough enough!
I went for 4 stars out of 5 simply because it is not 'fine ' dinning but that is not a reason to avoid this great little find. This combination dinning spot, carryout, and market is a surprise gem in a nondescript strip mall. There is not a bad meal on the menu and everything is flavorful and genuine Turkish-Mediterranean fare. The Turkish coffee and tea are prepared in the authentic style. The surprise item on the menu is the Turkish breakfast which is simple, hearty, and rustic. All of the standard items do not disappoint. The assortment of packaged Turkish candies, delight, home made baklava (a couple of assortments), cookies, etc are a great treat. The grocery carries teas, coffee, olive oil, candies, grains, and other dry staples of a Turkish kitchen. The refrigerated offerings vary in meats and cheeses. Pomegranate juice and fruit sodas are available as well. Friendly and attentive service from a genuinely nice family. Turkish music videos play regularly but kept at 'atmosphere ' levels and is not loud and obtrusive.
I've lived in King George, VA for 4 years, but I just tried Smyrna today. I ordered the Lamb Kofte Kebab and Profiterol for dessert. The serving was very generous. I think the dish is sized to feed 2 people, but I had the entire thing to myself. The price was fair. I really enjoyed the lamb. It was prepared perfectly. It reminded me of the kebabs I had while on deployment in Iraq. The bulgur pilaf was also delicious. It's just a shame that I did not try Smyrna sooner, because I will be moving away in just a couple of weeks. I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys Mediterranean style cuisine.
