We ate at the Calypso Bar and Grill on Highway 20, near the junction with Beach Express. We were very pleased with the meals we had and the cheery atmosphere and the friendliness of the owners. Leslie had the Cuban sandwich which had sliced ham, roasted Pork, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard in Cuban bread. She loved it and said it was delicious and would have again! Bob had the Calypso Burger ground chuck with cheddar cheese and lettuce tomato and onion. He loved the Cuban taste it had and will have again! We definitely recommend them. Bob and Leslie Patterson
Amazing in every way! I had tuna and my wife had crabcakes and both were fantastic.
Tucked away in the corner of a strip mall near the Glen Lakes subdivision off County Road 20, Calypso is a family-run Caribbean restaurant with a small but focused menu and a very casual atmosphere. Everything I?ve sampled here so far has been really good. The Cuban pork is outstanding, tender and juicy with a nice seasoning. The saffron rice and black beans were a great side, too. A recurring problem with rice as a side down here is restaurants tend to either overcook it or let it sit so it gets dry and hard. This was clearly rice made in a small batch to order because it was just right. Ditto the beans, which our server explained are cooked fresh daily from actual dried beans, nothing from a can or frozen. That fresh-never-frozen flavor is also evident in things like the lime sour cream topping, the sautéed vegetables and even the fried fish fingers and tartar sauce! And while I almost never get dessert at a restaurant, I had to try the funnel cake because FUNNEL CAKE, yo. It did not disappoint, and was big enough to be shared with everyone at the table. Every bit as good as one at a fair or festival! Prices are about average for the area; portions seem to be a bit more small (translation: normal for the rest of the planet) but what they lack in quantity, they more than make up for in quality. While it is a tiny place off the beaten path (relatively speaking), with a limited menu, it?s definitely going into my regular rotation. It was a total (pleasant) surprise.
I ordered the Cuban Pork Platter and it was absolutely divine. I only wish the service had been up to par. I live about a mile away and was absolutely starving. These days I 'm ordering take out because of the Covid situation. This was my second visit to the restaurant. The first time the food was good but not like tonight. The first time, we were limited in what we could order because business was slow as the restaurant had just opened. Therefore, all menu items were not available. So naturally, when I called I asked if this platter was available. I drive by the restaurant daily and I know how many vehicles are parked there, so I figured it 'd be appropriate to ask. I was not out to insult anyone. What I got was a seemingly frustrated person who was giving me the third degree because I even asked if the platter was being served. He then gave me a hard time because I had not been to the restaurant in 6 months. I told him I am usually out of town, otherwise I might have considered it. I then go to the restaurant in order to pick up my order and this same man is giving me a hard time because I didn 't wait the full 10 minutes for the order to be ready. The restaurant was EMPTY what would cause an order to be delayed if no one was there. Moreover, the order was indeed ready. So at this point, I was feeling harassed. Upon asking him why he was treating me badly, he said he was joking that this is the way he is. Not only was he not using a joking tone, he was condescending as he repeatedly called me dear. I almost walked out of the restaurant but because the order was being bagged I purchased it and hoped it didn 't come to me contaminated. I have never seen this man in my life and he took liberties with me that were inappropriate and offensive. I left there feeling berated through no fault of my own. I won 't go back. . .I can 't go back. . .because how you make a person feel in your establishment will linger forever. A shame, indeed, because the fo
