There was only one other set of diners in the dining room but, despite Covid, she seated us near them. When she brought the wine she opened it and plonked it on the table without offering it to us to taste and we had to serve ourselves. The food was OK and nicely presented but nothing special and rubbery texture suggested scallops had been unfrozen in a microwave before cooking. At the end of the meal, with a bill of €125, my husband presented his credit card to pay and they said they didn’t take cards because they had a poor internet connection (rubbish card machines work through phone lines). This had never been mentioned on booking, or on arrival and neither was it posted up to see in the restaurant, which is illegal. When we asked to see the sign the chef took us to the terrace and pulled out a blackboard that had been face down behind the outdoors bar. We had €90 in cash between us (so much for my husband treating me) and they demanded we leave a piece of ID and drive to Chambon to get money out of the wall. To top it all they demanded we return the unfinished bottle of Badoit we had taken with us saying it was on consignment! What a shame this delightful setting is marred by the unpleasant people running this restaurant, who are also flouting the law. I made sure to get a VAT receipt and hope this ensures that our cash payment was actually entered in the ledger.
We were a party of four women, one of whom is vegetarian. Chicken was the main dish, so we asked if she could have an omelette, the waitress went to ask the chef and returned to say No. Nothing else was available so she agreed to have rice, salad and vegetables for her main course, oh dear, she got a plateful of unseasoned white rice, two very small bits of lettuce and, at most, a dessert spoonful of tinned macedoine veg on the top of the rice. She got up and went to ask for some mayonnaise, which never arrived! It was a shocking meal for which she was charged the full price. For the rest of us, the starter was fine, the main course consisted of two very small bits of chicken, with two very small bits of lettuce and a reasonable portion of white unseasoned rice. Dessert was creme caramel which was underwhelming. We won’t be going back!
This restaurant is a great place for lunch while travelling through the ancient cities of the French region of Creuse. The restaurant is located between the towns of Chambon sur Voueize and Evaux les Bains in a secluded location on the banks of the mountain river. When we decided to turn off the road on the modest sign indicating the restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised by the picturesque view. In addition to the main hall, the restaurant has an open terrace above the river. Thanks to the fact that the restaurant is located in a small gorge, in addition to the delicious and good quality cuisine, it can offer a shadow and coolness even on the hottest day. At lunch, a set menu prepared by the chef (25 euros) is served: appetizer, main course (fish or meat to choose from), cheese, dessert (two desserts to choose from). There is a small wine list. Some simple wines are served by glasses and pichets (pitchers). It is possible to order dishes a la carte , but we were warned that you need to call in advance (better for the day). The a la carte dishes are more exquisite. The service is homely friendly. This local restaurant is worth to visit!
We had the €12 set lunch menu, which included 4 courses and 50cl each of wine! It was a really popular place, which was always full at lunchtimes. It was good, simple, tasty food at a bargain price. I particularly liked the 'help yourself to as much as you like ' cheeseboard!
