So we were looking for information about ancestors in Altenbruch. During the conversations in a café, a public organ evening/concert/exam for a German music student in the neighbouring St. Nicolai Church...was worth a visit. I had discovered Hadler Hof earlier and thought it was fascinating, so we planned dinner there after the event. The place is small, seating maybe 20, plus ?3? seats at the bar. This is a place in the neighborhood, and we were clearly not from the neighborhood. This is the rural northern coast of Germany, some[patrons smoke and the menu was largely fish, but they had a "special" sign outside for carving that sound good. Four different carvings were on the menu, only one unfamiliar. Service was prompt and patient as my German is decent, but some of the Platt Deutch vegetable names were a puzzle. A glass of acceptable rose and a dark beer quickly appeared as a decent mixed salad, sans salad as expected. The scavenger, pig natural, came in a timely fashion and were excellent, accompanied by piping hot pommes, marginal green beans, good cabbage and the desired mustard and ketchup. The first beer disappeared quickly, so the waitress beat a bigger... good note. The scavengers are gone, the plates are cleared, two small glasses of liquor appeared... quickly good and free. It seems to be part of the package as I had noticed that a table of 8 men received the same earlier. When she placed the schnapps, the lady asked a little gentle, as we were in her place [for what it is worth, we ran into no Americans, north or south, during our stay in the region], as we were clear gringos. I told her my name and ancestry, and that my great-grandfather was born in Altenbruch. She immediately turned to the 8 at the other table and enslaved them from our search; much interest followed. After about 5 minutes of intensive discussion a little useful information was created. Whatta Country!
It's always the hammer with you. .. sweet monks
