This place is not "off the beaten path" by my definition, but maybe overlooked by the great majority. I've been here maybe 6-8 times, and it is a standard for me.Atmosphere--quick stop with a few-3 tables inside and 2 tables outside. THIS is Cozumel. Friendly service with little to no English, so it matches my little to no Spanish perfectly! Menu has some English. The tiny dining room and connected kitchen is packed with the people who work there. Much of the business seems to be delivery--drawback is the fumes from the coming and going moped while sitting at the outdoor tables. One of they guys there has a developmental delay, and the first time I was there (a couple of years ago) they ushered him to the back. I must have looked overwhelmed, but it was not him, it was the environment, the crowded-ness, the tiny-ness, and the Spanish-ness. I tried to let them know it was OK... He sits in the restaurant and greets everyone and is friendly and talkative.Food--I am making my way through the menu, but a must have for me is the Hotcakes. I know that sounds boring, but the grill is hot, so the hotcakes get that crispy edge, and they serve it with regular syrup or sweetened condensed milk. Go for the s.c.milk! it's yummy, creamy and delicious! I've also had the Giant Empanadas, and they are not kidding, one will make a whole meal. Barbacoa is excellent! very flavorful. And I also ask for the Comida del Dia, which changes daily, but is a lot of food for about $5.Price--Delicious food that still leaves your wallet fat. You can get a hearty meal for under $80Pesos.
I found this great place on my way back and forth from my restaurant. I eat there at least 3 times a week and have eaten most things on the menu. My favorite is the quesadilla de masa Especial! It is basically a huge empanada that is stuffed with chicken, pork, beef, potato and cheese and covered with cream, lettuce and cheese! Fills a whole plate and hard to finish by myself! All for the low price of 35 pesos, less than $3.00usd! If you are looking for real mexican cooking from a small family run business, then this is definitely worth a visit! I know you won't be disappointed!
We had lunch there yesterday and had a wonderful meal. My husband had the chicken chimichanga and I had the shrimp tacos. This place has traditional Mexican cuisine and it tastes so fresh. We have eaten here before but couldn't find them on trip advisor so it is long over due that they are recognized. The owner speaks English but the waiters do not but are extremely friendly and helpful. Our meal with a big bottle of water and a bottle of diet coke only came to $8.00US! We also had tortilla chips and pico de gallo along with several different dipping sauces which were very good! My husband asked the cook for the recipe of one of the dipping sauces and he was kind enough to give it to us. So friendly!! Looking forward to returning to this establishment in the near future. Don't pass them by. You can't miss their restaurant, it is a bright orange building.
