Le Cygne - Conches-en-Ouche

Never, ever stay at this hotel. On the night we stayed, the bathroom door became completely stuck when we needed to use it in the night. After an hour of trying to open it and call reception, we summoned the owner by knocking on the door. She was anything but pleasant and helpful. She clearly thought it was our fault and grumbled and told us off in French which, possibly fortunately, we mostly did not understand. After two attempts she just disappeared, having given us access to the room next door. We had no idea if she was coming back so it was hard to know whether to go to sleep. The next morning was no better. She demanded we vacate the room about 90 mins before checkout and then complained because we weren’t finished with the other room. She said no other guests had had problems with the room, but that’s hard to believe. Apparently things don’t go wrong simply because they are worn out or develop a fault. I’ll tell that to my garage the next time my car goes wrong. The whole place looks like it’s on its last legs and anything could go wrong at any time. The worst aspect of all of this was her attitude. I have never had to deal with such a rude, unhelpful and downright unpleasant person in any kind of hospitality I have used. She raised her voice, she pointed her finger, she waved her arms. When we came to pay she wanted to charge us for both the rooms we had used, as if having to go to another room for bathroom facilities was our choice! All in all this was a complete disaster. We had little sleep although we had a full day’s driving ahead and we were stressed and angry. But how different it would have been if she had had a different attitude. If she had once apologised for the inconvenience to us rather than blaming us for it. We may have laughed about it later. Now we’re seething!

We were staying in a gite nearby and this restaurant was on the recommended list. We were passing and thought that we would give it a try. It was a late lunch by french standards but we were very well looked after. The food was absolutely delicious and I enjoyed every mouthful. My wife found her beef undercooked by English standards but they were happy to redo it. The food is locally sourced and there was a very Normande theme. Fantastic meal. We will definitely return next time we are nearby.

We had two excellent meals at this family run restaurant. Not cheap but by no means expensive for the quality varied and interesting fixed price menus using local produce equals value for money in a pleasant atmosphere.

I point out that one thing that the bathroom faucet is noisy of the sinks after 22:30 and should be to review, thank you for the reception.
