Cat & The Fiddle - Cobourg

While the Cobourg directory lists plenty of restaurants, several of them are now closed, a few offer only breakfast & lunch, a disproportionate number are ethnic, and a lot of them are fast-food or takeout joints. I'm not saying that they aren't good restaurants - they were just not what we were looking for - i.e. a family restaurant serving primarily comfort food like meatloaf, hot turkey sandwiches, ham & scalloped potatoes, pork chops, ...With little choice, we chose to dine at the Cat & Fiddle - a British style pub & bar serving pub fare and some traditional English mains. I had the "British roast dinner" and my wife ordered the chicken pot pie.The roast dinner included a mini Yorkie (good) and a loaf of fresh-baked sourdough bread (really good). The mixed veggies were OK and not the frozen variety. The mashed potatoes were good but the "rich gravy" was anything but. Instead the 1/2 ounce on my mashed potatoes was weak & watery, but they did bring me more when I asked for it.The pot pie was beautifully baked and topped with an inch of light, flaky, golden puff pastry. It was loaded with chicken and some mixed vegetables (not enough) bathed in a creamy sauce that was not gravy. It came with a generous serving of thick, delicious fresh-cut fries and a small side of creamy coleslaw.If we were to re-visit the Cat & Fiddle, we'd probably stick with the English-style battered fish & chips.

Heard about this place when we were in Dominican Republic. Decided we had to go for a quick pint and snack on our way to Toronto. We had the nachos which I would have to say were the best nachos I've ever had! Looking forward to another visit!

Who doesn't enjoy a charming English pub? The Cat & The Fiddle is beautifully decorated with red velvet, creating an adorable atmosphere.

The food service at this restaurant was terrible. It was my first time here and I am from out of town. Additionally, they only accepted cash, which was very inconvenient.

I have visited this restaurant many times over the years with my dad for beer and wings, and I have always enjoyed my experience.
