2020-01-13. Kabob Village. Clinton Twp, MI. My regular mid-east restaurant has been slowly declining in quality and taste, so I'm on the prowl for a new go-to for Lebanese. Read some really good reviews about this place and some of my friends vouched for this place, so we decided to give it a shot. Kabob Village is located in a plaza on the east side of Garfield between 17 Mi 18 Mi with free plaza parking out front. Inside the decor is a bit washed. Brown seems to be the theme, and they have all shades of it. From the darkest adorning their windows to the lightest on the floors and upper walls. Even the laminated granite tabletops are brown! A single flat panel television is mounted in the near corner as you enter, booths flank the sides and tables and chairs fill the center with seating capacity of about 64. The center tables can be pooled together to accommodate larger parties. Being our first visit, we went with out favorites to see how Kabob Village stacks up to our standards. After perusing the menu, we opted for the Combo for 3 with Lentil soup for the sides. We added a side of Fatayer Bi Sabanekh spinach pie/turnover as well. I've had Beef Fatayer or Sfeehas before and it was fantastic! So I had to try it again. Among our favorite Middle East dishes is the fresh pita and Toum Garlic spread . While waiting for our food, none was brought out to us. No biggie, I asked them for it and it came within minutes. The bread was fresh baked and piping hot as it should be. The Toum was a tad lemony and the garlic was slightly spicy. The color was pure white, and the texture was light and fluffy like a cloud. Overall pretty good stuff. 4 stars. The Fatayer here was not nearly as flaky as the Sfeehas meat pies I've had in the past. But this is not too big a surprise, Fatayer can be made many different ways from a variety of dough ranging from dinner rolls, to pizza, to bread. The spinach wasn't dry, but it didn't have much flavor either. It was kinda plain Jane. IMO, some Feta cheese would have brought it up to par. 2 stars. Our combo for 3 platter came with all our usual suspects. Beef and Chicken Kafta, Beef and Chicken Shawarma, a chicken cream chop, and a Chicken Kabob all atop a bed of long grain Basmati rice. Except it was served on a bed of lettuce! We let our server know of the mistake, and they made it up to us by offering us a free salad uh, why not just bring us the rice we ordered? . We also didn't get the traditional Potato and Beef stew that comes with the rice, but that was expected once we knew we were not going to get rice. As usual, we attacked the grilled chicken breast skewer first as it will dry out if not eaten immediately. The chicken was nicely charred and cooked thoroughly. The chicken was still most, but was on the cusp of drying out. Looks like the chef got it off the grill in the nick of time. The Beef Kafta and Beef Shawarma were also still moist and tender, but the Sharwarma lacked in spices. 3,5 and 2,5 stars respectively. The Chicken Kafta and Chicken Shawarma was a repeat of the Beef with the Kafta being better than the Shawarma and thus gets the same scores. Lastly, the Chicken Cream Chop. The breading here was nice and light and crispy. Although it was on the dry side, it held it's own. 3,5 stars. Tabbouleh Salad. This was complementary because we didn't get our rice. It's your typical restaurant Tabbouleh where the parsley diced with stems. Made traditionally with Bulgur wheat, Olive Oil, and Lemon Juice. The juice cut the salad nicely here and the wheat provided some nice texture variation. 3 stars. While the meal wasn't exactly bad, it didn't stand out either. I found out when the bill came that the Pita and Toum are not complementary $2 per 6 pcs . In the end, Kabob Village is your run of the mill Lebanese cuisine and my search will continue. 3 stars overall. Regular at this place. Friendly staff, easy to order and delicious to eat. Recommend the chicken shawarma wrap, and their garlic sauce bread for a first time buyer. Bring on the garlic baby!!!!!!!
Unassuming, good prices, and amazing food..best chicken shawarma I have ever had. Food is very flavorful and not dry. Exceptionally friendly staff as well.
Presumably this restaurant is related to Kabob Castle but it was worse in every way. Nothing was necessarily *bad*, but when you go to one location that you really like and they recommend you try their new location it's difficult to compare it in a vacuum. If this was some other chain I probably would have given it three stars. In my opinion I thought everything was a worse okay-ish version of the same items. The bread, garlic dip, and house dressing were all worse. Some of the meat was also pretty dry. The service was good but the place was also completely dead, no other diners or carryout orders that we saw on a Friday night. I'll just stick with the Kabob Castle location which I feel has been consistently good over multiple visits.
