It may have taken a while to find it, but I may have found the best café in Cedar Rapids!Bea’s Café’s atmosphere was incredible. When my friend and I first walked in around 7:30 a.m. one of the first things I noticed was how bright and cheerful the café was. It had a very lively feel to it. The waitress there treated us very well. She was more than just courteous; she was very warm and friendly. I felt like I was eating with family or old friends. The service was incredible. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about what the café offered. She even made great suggestions based on our conversation. Most importantly, she was there when we needed it, whether it was when we were ready to order our next course, or when we needed our hot chocolate refilled.I had a couple of different dishes. First, I had steak and eggs. That dish includes a small steak with eggs on the side. I chose to go scrambled. It also came with American fries, which I chose over hashbrowns. Being the cheesy person, I added cheese to the eggs and the American fries, each of which is their own upcharge. The dish normally would come with toast or a biscuit, but I chose to substitute a pancake instead which added a minor upcharge. When the plate arrived, it looked fantastic. I was excited and seeing the plate made me feel even hungrier than I already was. The steak was prepared exactly how I asked which was medium well. It had nice charring on the top and bottom but still had a bit of squish in the center. That gave it a bit of a crunchy crust while still being tender and juicy. I have to mention the pancake. It was HUGE! Besides being larger than most restaurants in the area I’ve been to it was also thick. Considering the size, I was also impressed by how perfectly cooked it was. I’ve been to more than a few restaurants where the pancake, especially the middle was so mushy as to seem undone. This pancake was light and fluffy and made my mouth very happy. After that, I also had their biscuits and gravy. This dish was well-plated also. The two biscuits were both very fluffy. Also, Bea’s Café does not skimp on the gravy. The biscuits weren’t just covered in gravy, they were smothered. It’s important to mention that Bea’s Café uses sausage gravy not just simply country gravy like some other places do. That might not matter to some but to me getting biscuit and plain gravy is highly disappointing. The gravy that Bea’s Café served was flavorful, but for my tastebuds, that flavor was weaker than I would have liked.I can’t skip mentioning the hot chocolate I had. It was amazing! I’ve been to other restaurants where the hot chocolate tasted like someone just put some hot cocoa mix into some hot water, stirred it and that was it. For some, it was like just drinking hot water. I’ve had experiences where the hot chocolate was so bad, that I had to have a friend remind me I had gotten it before because I had blocked it from my mind. At Bea’s Café, the hot chocolate is actually chocolatey. I found myself pausing to savor each sip I took. I was feeling warm and fuzzy inside. It even caused me to get a refill, which was free by the way.Bea’s Café may be the best place I’ve been to in Cedar Rapids. I would say the pricing may be slightly higher than some others. However, the quality of the food more than justifies that in my opinion. The pancakes and hot chocolate were standouts for me. Both of those alone would make a visit worthwhile. I do need to go back to try some more dishes on the menu, especially something more in the lunch category. I will say this, if you are looking for a great place to eat breakfast Bea’s Café has both the quality you want and the variety your group needs.
1st time there. Placed take out order. The Two ladies working were very nice and welcoming. That's a surprise as most places round here just seem not to even acknowledge you . Anyways the food was good and they do serve breakfast any time which is nice. I would actually recommend them and will be visiting again myself. Great work !
A great little breakfast diner. very cozy and warm vibes. food was good, but nothing exceptional either. staff was very nice and seemed to actually be enjoying themselves. only complaint was a bit of a mix up when paying, the staff was taking their time collecting our bills, so we just took them up front instead. because of this there was some miscommunication, so we had to prove that we payed for our meals and didn't just leave.
Very nice cafe. Not what you expect in a city. Real good food. Great staff. Have had breakfast here a few times. I love the Greek omelet. I highly recommend this Cafe.
