We went to dinner on May 14th, it was very quiet in the restaurant, as the only people there, it was lunchtime when we booked! the 20 euro menu is very good, it is not fine dining room, but rustic, as is. the decoration.
The court of salmon, lobster and some other husks I ordered did not look very fresh and was badly cooked. the waiter still fed three floors when we waited for order. the storage room, which was very close by, was kept open during dinner. as Saturday night there were only two more tables with two people each, a good note that we have made the wrong choice.
Le Cathare was recommended by a waiter at our regular apéro bar, Chez Felix. Down a little side street, off Place Carnot, we were welcomed by an open fire and a friendly team. It was Saturday night and the town was full shoppers at...the Xmas Market, ice skaters, festive revellers and we hadn’t booked, but a table was made available. It soon became apparent as we sipped a coupe de champagne, that the fire wasn’t just for ambiance, but it actually cooked the entrecôte, duck, fish and lobster. Everyone received a steaming bowl of vegetable broth to begin with. There were set menus, but you could swap dishes between them. We shared a plate of garlicky razor clams and a foie gras. Then our entrecôtes were brought for approval, before being grilled to perfection underneath log fuelled flames. Molten duck fat was used to season them. They were tender and delicious. House wine by the picher was good value and we ended with oozing chocolate fondants. We cant wait to go again and hope the fire keeps burning.
