Safari Grill - Calgary

Went here as part of a monthly dinner club. Ali the owner? was great with good suggestions the food is African with Tusker beer and South African wines. They had generous portions, on our table was Butter Chicken, samosas, several curries and I had the special which was deer skewers with corn and fries in a spicy sauce. Not one complaint about either the service or the food. Definitely recommend. This is one of those places you can go into and just say feed me try it!

First time there and wasn’t disappointed !! Good was excellent, will definitely come back !

As always, the owner Ali treated us like family in every way. Food as always was outstanding and they had our favourite wine back in stock as well. A taste of African-Indian cuisine from the Tanzania region just waiting to be savoured.

Went with my family on a week night and service was quick and friendly. Food was wonderful. There were four of us so we had a variety of appetizers and meals. I paired a South African pinotage wine with our meals and was very pleased. Saw the comments on a previous post about the bathrooms but maybe they have been since renovated? My wife said it was fine, even nicely decorated.

I waited awhile before I decide to write a review as I can’t believe the high praises this establishment got. Did we come at a bad night? Did the kitchen have an off night? The food was bland at best and did not have any spices. Is that typical of African dishes? There is only one color in our plate and that is red maybe paprika?! The price point too is too high for ethnic cuisine. The server was nice but was not as knowledgeable as we had hoped. Honestly, what is up with this “food critic” saying that the place is authentic?! I’m sorry but I beg to disagree. I have coworkers who brought great African food on work potluck and I expected something like the caliber of what we had at work in a “highly rated” restaurant as this. What a disappointment. Not returning.
