Jake's Soulfood Cafe - Birmingham

I had a great experience with the service at this restaurant. The cashier was very friendly and welcoming, and the woman calling out orders to the kitchen was also nice. I was excited at first, but unfortunately, I was disappointed with the food. I didn't enjoy the German chocolate cake, and none of the dishes - oxtails, curry chicken, jerk chicken, beans and rice, and plantains - appealed to me. I had hoped for a cozy meal, but it turns out that the website was not up to date and dining in was not an option.

I ordered delivery from Jake's. It was okay. The food wasn't overcooked, but it lacked flavor. The catfish was tasty but could have used more seasoning. The cabbage was overly salty and the mac n cheese was bland, despite being priced at $6 which seemed overpriced for the portion. The greens were the only dish that had good flavor in my opinion. I ordered the jerk wings deluxe with a side of rice and peas and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was tasty, but the wings were not jerk flavored as advertised; they were more of a spicy, sweet BBQ. Unfortunately, the excessive BBQ sauce drowned my rice and peas, making it difficult to eat. Overall, I found the food to be overpriced and the experience disappointing. I do not plan on returning and would not recommend ordering from this restaurant, especially since it is take out only and does not have Jamaican cooks.

WOW!! I have been wanting to try Jake's Soulfood Cafe for the longest. I'm elated that my wait is over. We had delivery of tonight's dinner and it came quickly and was superb! The Kingston's Combination Plate was fabulous. The Jerk Chicken melted in my mouthwith just the right amount of spicy heat and sweetness. The Curry Chicken was yummy and the Oxtails slowly roasted fell off of the bones. All bone sucking good. The bed of Caribbean rice was the perfect accompaniment with

The food was exceptional! We actually drove 2.5 hours to Birmingham to have lunch at Papadeaux. As always the wait was extensive, so we decided to try something new. I'm so happy we did, we"ll definitely be back!
