Bidra med feedbackNice local bar with friendly staff. We started with the ginger wings and they were crispy, tasty and served hot. Then we got the Montreal fries, aka poutine. Very disappointing... the fries, sauce and meat on top were barely warm. The cheese was one big disc on top. The fries need to be a thicker cut for that plate. Then we got the Mac and cheese... although over-salted, it was really good. Kudos to Hanna and Jacob working their butts off behind the bar.
School House Pub is great for drinks and the service is friendly/attentive. The food was mediocre at best. The fish and chips… oh god the fish and chips… Texas has more seasons than the fish and chips had seasoning. Overcooked and bland. The fish swam its whole life to be turned into that abomination. At least I’ll remember that fish I guess… as the worst fish and chips I’ll probably ever have.
Talk about a hole in one! What a gem. This is our favorite hangout in Austin. Amazing food and atmosphere, mezcal bar, and excellent Mexican food next door at Mi Madres (family business). Please support local businesses and enjoy this place frequently! Montreal fries are always on point. Wife loves the turkey burger. Best fish and chips this side of 35!
As a teacher, I loved the decor and the atmosphere. It was like entering an old-school schoolhouse with amazing food and drink. The stuff was amazing, and much better than anything you would find standing in line back when you were waiting for a sloppy joe.
I was craving poutine, so during today's stroll, I decided to try my luck at School House Pub. Luckily, they will have it back on the menu next week! I was greeted by the relaxed bartender Mauricio, who noticed my slightly flustered demeanor and reassured me. He recommended the fish and chips and Crawford Bock, both on happy hour, so naturally, I tried them both. I also tried the cauliflower wings, which were a hit. The food was amazing, although the French fries were a bit overcooked. The vegan ranch and unique tartar sauce were delicious. I had a great conversation with Mauricio about the changing restaurant scene in East Austin. He even served me his favorite mezcal over ice, which was delightful. The atmosphere was laid back and cool, with Día de los Muertos decorations and British patrons adding to the unique vibe. I can't wait to return!
