Bidra med feedbackCame here after a local YouTuber recommended it whilst we were researching different restaurants in the area. I was able to book a table the same day over the phone for 5:30pm. I was told the restaurant was full from 8pm onwards which I get the impression is the norm. We were seated quickly and given food menus. We had to ask for a wine list. The food menu is sparse in terms of explanations as to what come with what. There was a section called “portions” and I wasn’t sure if these were additional starters or mains and the waiter explained they were starters but could be had as a main if we wished. Bread was brought to our table without us asking, which didn’t bother me but it didn’t come with any butter or oil/vinegar. We ordered Octopus and Prawns to start followed by two ribeye steaks. We were asked how we’d like them cooked and stayed medium rare. No sides were offered to us or explained on the menu so we just decided to see what came. We ordered a bottle of Rioja (the one I originally wanted they didn’t have anymore) and waited. The restaurant itself is very nicely decorated, the tables and chairs large and comfy. The starters came and they were really tasty! When the steaks came out they were presented with one roasted tomato which was halved and cooked with herbs and a plate of fries to share. The portion size was actually fine what the problem was, was the cooking of the steak. It had been cooked rare not medium rare which meant the fat had not rendered enough and it was hard to cut even with the steak knives. It was seasoned well but ultimately was a disappointment. I asked the waiter for water, aioli and another bottle of red and they came over very quickly. We stayed for dessert, I had the baked cheesecake which was lovely and my husband had a set custard along with a Spanish coffee he had asked the waiter about which was also very nice. This restaurant clearly has a local clientele and the wait staff clearly give them the best service. However if you are direct with them in what you want they will get it for you. Don’t expect to be offered suggestions or advice though unless you directly ask them. You are there to find your own way! Would we go back? No. Simply because the steak which should have been the star of the show was cooked incorrectly. The meal in total was €150.
10/10. Would highly recommend. They gave my mother and I a nice table in the corner even though we had no booking. The food was incredible and the waiting staff were very friendly and efficient. Thank you!
An old favourite. Even though in the tourist area, Meson Castellano doesn’t shift much from being a traditional Spanish restaurant. Good ingredients, cooked simply, served by professionals who have no need to become your best mate. Earlier in the evening, you find most customers are North European tourists while, later on, local Spaniards take up the tables. As with many restaurants, post Covid, they’ve scaled back their once very extensive menu, but there’s still plenty of choice. Bread was good. Thick slices of a crusty loaf. Garlic mushrooms were pretty much as you’d expect – fried in olive oil flavoured with garlic and parsley. Good job we hadn’t scoffed all the bread as it was handy for mopping up the last of the oil. For a main course, half a leg of suckling lamb, roasted and served on the bone. It comes with nothing more than fried potatoes and onions, finished in the fat of the lamb roasting tin It’s the sort of plate of food that makes me go all Fred Flintstone, wanting to gnaw the bone. Meanwhile, Wilma had started with a Piquillo pepper stuffed with seafood, served coated in a piquant creamy sauce. This is offered by the piece and the guy said one would be enough. And so it was. Although had it been me, I’d have wanted two. That was followed by grilled salt cod, topped with slices of garlic. It came with grilled tomatoes and a few Canarian potatoes. We were too full for dessert, so just got coffee and the bill.
Es de los de siempre. No falla nunca.
