Initial impression was Wow, this place looks great , Hostess was very, very nice (to the point of being not genuine) the staff was very friendly and good initially, then it took a turn for the worse. Perhaps the male waiter thought we were not big spenders? It took several minutes, maybe 10 to get a additional beer. A side of asparagus was 3 pieces, the Halibut was dry and tasteless, the soup of the day, a chowder, was cold and again bland, tasteless; waited for the waiter to take it back for a warm up but he was unavailable? We left hungry. We ate a the Highliner the night before and it was fantastic! We had miss giving 's when we walked in and talked about leaving, in hindsight we wish we did. $111.00 thrown into the wind. Buyer beware.
Fine dining in Alaska? Yes, at Cookery! We had to make reservations but the wait was worth it. From the local oysters to salmon entree and dessert, all the food was excellent in taste and presentation. The wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive. We tried the blueberry hand pie, cream cheese ice cream and chocolate pot desserts-all delicious!
Best food we have had in Alaska! Hands down. Actually best food I have had in a long time anywhere! We had a butter poached and grilled pork special with purple potato mash that was outstanding. And sounds odd, but a fried chicken over a Napa cabbage and cucumber salad with pickled onion. Both were amazing. So tasty and creative. Couldn’t pick a fav! I wish I could have this is my town! And outstanding service by Shelby. The entire crew really knows how to run a high end restaurant. Such teamwork in action. I was so impressed. I see now why you have to have a reservation. The place was packed.
The staff were very good. Don 't get the steak! My rare steak was very overcooked and only about a quarter inch thick. The sauce made it ok, but not good. They gave me 10% off on the steak only. We live in Seward and eat out 2 to 4 times a week. Unlikely to return to The Cookery.
Highly recommended and highly rated on Trip Advisor. On a Tuesday night, at 745 we were rudely told I should have made reservations. Web site is confusingly as states they DON'T take reservations online for parties under 6. Thought it was first come first served. Clearly treated like tourists. Don't care how good the food is should not tolerate rudeness.
