Gorgeous location! 165 Euro for one night and calling themselves a pousada, I was filled with big expectations. Thought about a nice relaxed evening after travelling a lot that day, with a nice glass of wine and some nice food. I won 't describe all my disappointments. It 's a long list. Nothing, really nothing, was fitting to the location and the price. So no nice relaxed evening. Won 't give details, just gonna tell you about the kitchendog. The rest of what went wrong you can fill in your selves. The servant was searching for the dog. I said: was just here, between the tables, that shouldn 't be, should it. His reaction:no, no, no, he belongs in the kitchen. That 's why I call it the kitchendog. Never been in a restaurant that allows or even lets live a dog in the kitchen. Unbelievable! What kind of food can you expect from a cook who allows the dog around his feet? ........ Exactly. At 22.30 everyone was sleeping. Lights were off. So you had to go to your room. Nice corners outside to sit, but no lights. In the middle of the night, waking up stuffy, the air conditioning I had set also was switched off..... Saving money? Short :a 5-star location but counting everything I experienced together there are 2 options : 1. The owner doesn 't know what he 's doing or 2. he 's in big financial trouble. If 1 or 2, I will never go back there. NB the menu: the entrecote txogitxu I read about on their website was not available so the 'meia perdiz ' for around 20 Euro. No vegetables, no possibility of ordering any.
We visited Vale Do Gaio in September for 3 nights seeking isolation from the busy city life in Amsterdam. We enjoyed our stay at Vale Do Gaio sincerly! Such peace and quit, it kind of scared me that places like this, so rustique and beautiful, still excist. The outside of the hotel is great, many lounge beds available with views over the valley, great pool area and free kayaks. The restaurant is also great! We had lunch and dinner every day. The quality was very good. Prices might be slightly higher than elsewhere in Portugal, but remember you are in a very remote beautifull place. Great value for money in my opinion. Also a great wine menu is available the housewines on their own are well worth it and very tasty. The staff is also very attentive and kind. The owner gave us a nice complementary upgrade to a room with a view. He told us that the place is about the close down for renovations. I’ve seen some 3D mockups of what it could become, sure seems promising! In all, 5* review! Great place, wish we can return one day!
We visited the Rice fields of Aparroz and were taken for the most wonderful lunch with the Rice Krafters. (The farmers and growers of the rice) Vale do Gaio is a brilliant restaurant, high up above the dam, a beautiful terrace in the lovely gardens. Vasco was our host and what a fantastic host he is. Warm, welcoming and great fun. Our starters arrived and every one was spot on. Pigs trotters, terrine, chorizo on toast, smoked salmon on crisp bread, croquettes, grouper in a lovely minestrone type broth and of course a delicious risotto with the local rice. (All wonderful dishes) Desserts are local classics and all brilliant and delicious. This was a brilliant lunch and truly a fantastic restaurant. A special place that I cannot wait to return to. Atmosphere, service and food all first class. Thank you Vasco, you are exactly what hospitality is all about. The best restaurant experience I have had in many years..
