Fritzpatrick's Irish Pub - Werden

This was my second trip up to Essen for an annual conference which was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID. However, this time around, I jumped at the chance to return to Northern Germany. I remembered this place form my first trip here, but I...did not drink or dine here, partly because it was always packed and partly because I tend to avoid pub food since I lived in the UK for three plus years. Still, an Irish pub always guarantees fun. It certainly did not disappoint this time either. I started out with your typical Irish Kilkenny red beer, which is made by Guinness if I recall correctly. Not wanting to stray to far from the Irish fare, the waiter suggest trying the Sri Lankan chicken curry. I pulled out google maps and learned that the distance from Ireland to Sri Lanka is 9,245 kilometers, which is equal to 5,745 miles. So, that's not too far off course. I completely skipped over the Irish stew, black pudding, bangers and mash, and fish and chips for this traditional Sri Lankan curry, which was served with eggplant, broccoli, peppers, and carrots. I will say that I was quite impressed to see an Irish pub offering not one, but two Sri Lankan dishes. All in all, a very good meal with outstanding service.

Thank goodness we were there early enough to get a table we hadn't reserved in advance , 6pm the place was pretty full. Guinness was on tap so I ordered three pints while we checked the menu out. We left the starters.. and went straight for the Diavolo Burger, a Guinness Burger and a Fish n'Chips with peas. I was a bit disappointed with the size of the Diavolo Burger, rather small for nearly 15 Euro and they didn't have any Jalapeños to go with it. The fish was two triangular shaped pieces frozen fish by the looks of it and not fresh Plaice, Cod or Haddock sort that you would get in the UK etc. The staff were kept busy as the evening went by and the outside seating area filled up to max capacity. It's seems to be an in place for young people it's certainly worth popping in for a couple of pints and a bite to eat even though their website is only in German. Cheers.

Pubs like Fritzpatricks are not found in abundance in Essen. There is a good choice of beer and decent food. In good condition there is a good outside area to enjoy your pint.

Enjoyable irish pub, they can be very good for events (and full) but everytime I did Halloween, Karneval, or whatever there I usually had a pretty good time. Food is quite good. Can also be nice in the summer if you were just around at...the park or trail and just feel like chilling out for a while.
