My partner and I stopped in on a quiet Tuesday evening and what a wonderful surprise. We had the Moroccan Teapot (minty, delicious) before eating. We had the Labney for an appetizer it was terrific. He had the Moroccan Chicken, I had the Combo Meat Plate. We both loved it. I'm not usually a fan of rice, I've always found it to be pretty taste free just something to put the real food on but their RICE! I don't know what they do to give it such flavor, but it was amazing I ate it all rather than leaving it on the plate as I usually do. This little gem is worth the trip. A real find.
A divine experience from start to finish: from the dim, red ambient lighting, setting a magical mood; to the delectable food, sparking sensations in me that I didn’t think I needed in that moment. Do you remember the scene in “Ratatouille” when Anton Ego takes his first bite of ratatouille and he becomes transported to his mother’s kitchen in France? I had a similar moment even though I have never been to Morocco and I have never had Moroccan food, but the moment I took a bite of my dish, Morocco was calling my heart. I had the Moroccan chicken. Everything about the dish was perfect. The chicken was juicy. The plating presentation was superb. The portions were generous. My dish even came with a salad and a gigantic pita bread. The only issue I had was the chewy skin of the eggplant, but I know larger eggplants usually have rougher skin, so it didn’t bother me too much. If I am ever in the Portland area again, it would be my pleasure to step inside the doors of Tangier… again… and again.
We will drive 3 hours every couple of months to visit our favorite restaurant now that we've moved north of Portland. We used to dine there once a week. Why? Because of the food and the people making it! The food. I'm vegan; my husband eats anything. We're never disappointed with what Nagia and her daughters serve up. It's always made fresh, from scratch, and using old family recipes they brought from Morocco. The menu options are varied, and vegans won't leave hungry! If you want an alteration to a menu item, they will accommodate you as much as possible. I know because I am the queen of substitutions! The people. This is a family-owned and operated restaurant. Mom does most of the cooking and prep work while her daughters help her by taking orders, serving, and assisting her in the kitchen. They are very hard working, kind, courteous, salt-of-the-earth people who care deeply about providing the best for their customers. When in Portland, do yourself a favor: fill your belly and your soul with the best of Morocco that the city has to offer.
Delicious lamb Tangier with lemon olives and rice. The service was lovely and the food was amazing! It’s a nice little hidden gem.
