Los Bisquets Obrigon - Mérida

We visited the LBDO on Calle 51 in the west end, not the address shown, but it is a chain so the menus are the same at all locations. The fresh coffee was very good and bottomless. Waiter was attentive and friendly (Alexis). I ordered the chilaquiles with chicken and the portion was certainly adequate and freshly prepared. I forgot to ask for two fried eggs which I normally like on my chilaquiles...Relatively inexpensive...

I have eaten here many times but since it has been over a year, thought I would give it another try. For the most part, a disappointing experience.This time, we went for breakfast and compared to other restaurants in the area, I find them overpriced. A fairly large breakfast menu including several ¨packages¨. We decided to try the chilaquile package, including fruit or juice and coffee. What is advertised as a fruit plate, is just that, a single fruit. This visit a choice of melon or mango. The melon was good and a generous portion. Next came the main event, the chilaquiles. The portion was huge and looked appetizing enough but the chilaquiles were bland , room temperature and soggy. We wanted more coffee but it was quite a shore to flag down a waitress and then 10 minutes before she brought lukewarm coffee. With so many really good choices around town, I would avoid this one if possible.

The owner of our hotel knew we were headed down to the zócalo and recommended breakfast at Bisquets, which he described as a chain style restaurant but recommend their café con leche, exactly what I needed to get going. I had chilaquiles verde, my wife had a simple pancake breakfast. The café con leche is served in a tall glass. First they pour your coffee, and the waitress gave me the international sign for “say when.” Apparently I like my coffee stronger than most patrons, and she looked a little shocked at my insistence on more coffee. After the coffee, leche is poured from a dizzying height. The process was fun and the coffee was really good. Our bill was 227 pesos $18.16 US) plus tip.

It has been awhile so thought it time for another visit. Really felt I wasted my time and money. First, the service was slow. I did finally manage to flag down a waitress and get a menu and coffee. Then she vanished. After really seeing little especially appealing for breakfast, I decided how could they go wrong on a simple local dish like huevos rancheros. They managed. Nothing more than two fried eggs in a bland, thin red sauce. The one thing I do enjoy is the little bown of spicy pickles and vegetables placed on the table. Actually this had some flavor. I will say the server was pleasant, when she could be located. The coffee is good and refills free, when the server can be found. They do a good business but really can't imagine why. Likely much is due to the excellent corner location on the main square. The prices are much higher and quality much lower than many nearby restaurants. I won't return for another review!
