In 1994, my wife and I first tried tamales from Ancira Tamales, and they were undeniably the best we had ever tasted. The tamales had just the right amount of pork, and the filling was perfectly seasoned—not at all salty. However, during our most recent visit, it seemed like the recipe had changed. The masa must have been prepared by someone who loves salt because the tamales tasted overly salty this time. In the past, I always rated Ancira Tamales with five stars, but after our last experience, I can only give them three stars. It's a shame because Ancira has a great reputation, but if their quality continues to decline, their competitors may start to take over.
The fries are great, but the downside is that they run out quickly due to high demand. I definitely recommend trying them, but make sure to get there early!
A dozen to go home. I'm just placing it in San Diego for 32 years. I have tried before and also since other places, but others simply do not come in quality or taste.
Fast service and quality tamales. If you call in advance they will let you know whether they have the tamales you are looking for. Their salsa is also very good. Only drawback might be the price per tamale but tamales are now expensive all over the place. Plus you get the quality you pay for. Be sure to call you order in ahead of tine so you don't have to wait. Also they are closed on Sundays.
