Thank goodness! After a brief diversion, the Gladdie has returned to being a fantastic pub and dining spot. The food is excellent, the service is great, and the atmosphere is welcoming. I'm not sure what it's like on weekends when the urban crowd heads to the countryside, but during the week, it's a delightful experience. Keep up the good work!
However, when we arrived, we were not informed that the "Pensioner Specials" were available; instead, we were only told that smaller-sized meals with three items were offered. The items we ordered were part of that list, but honestly, they were so small that they felt more like appetizers. We waited 35 minutes for our meals, even though only two other tables had ordered before us. We left feeling like we had been taken advantage of. While the quality of the meals was great, we ended up paying over $100.00 for four meals, two pints of beer, an orange juice, and a coke. Once bitten, twice shy. - Wileyone
What a gem. Cruising the wine region on a lazy Friday we stumbled across this little pub with no great expectation. There was one other group there so we settled outside in the sun. NZ had turned the weather on for us and it was a perfect day. My wife had the open steak sandwich and I got the pork belly calamari and prawn Thai salad. Excellent. Generous in size and great value fir money. Look there was no one else there so the food came out quick so I can't comment on what it would be like on a busy day but I was very impressed and left very satisfied. If the weathers right and the crowds are down then try this place.
The Gladstone is really a package deal that can't simply be reviewed on the basis of one particular aspect. You need to combine atmosphere, food, beer, the pleasant drive or ride to Gladstone and the feeling evoked by knowing that Gladstone is one of the increasingly rare country pubs in the Wairarapa. It is also one that has been successful because of what it has to offer and being a successful county pub is no mean feat. <br/ <br/ Bogan free, this is a pub that attracts farming types, elderly bikers and families out for a drive. The food is ok, the beer ok and sitting outside on a sunny day will invariably draw you back again.<br/ <br/ Going to Gladstone without going to the pub is missing out on something good. It's not Michelin but it is part of our heritage, and that's important.<br/ Recommended
