Tropical - Calgary

This used to be my go-to spot because there was always a friendly and helpful lady who took care of me. However, the service has been awful the last few times I've been. Last Thursday, I arrived to find the door locked even though they were supposed to be open. A waiter just stared at me while I struggled to get in. Tonight (Friday), I waited for thirty minutes before anyone even acknowledged my presence. As much as I used to enjoy this place, I can't justify spending my money here anymore.

Do not come here! I came with a friend and we ended up leaving after not seeing our food for an hour. We should have listened to all the bad reviews online. Our order was somehow forgotten or missed, as I had to ask for my drink multiple times (they kept bringing me red wine that I didn't order). Another waiter even had to ask us what we had ordered for food. When we asked our waitress about our food, she told us to be patient because they were very busy, with an attitude. We could see that they were busy, but other tables who came after us were already eating and leaving. If they had just apologized or acknowledged their mistake, we would have stayed. The people next to us also complained about their food. How is this place still in business? I'll celebrate with Sangria when it inevitably closes down.

I have been a regular patron of Tropical Restaurant in Calgary for 4-5 years and I can confidently say it is amazing! The prices are reasonable, the food is delicious, and the drinks are top-notch. If you happen to be in town on the weekends, be sure to check out their lively dance parties. They offer a variety of themed events such as neon and retro nights. The management is fantastic and I have always been treated well for all the right reasons.

We drove past Sunday and stopped by when we tried this place and we saw the wall that was the happy hour of 3-6 on Sunday, but when we went to the waitress, Happy Hour of 4-6 said. When I asked and asked what was written literally on the wall, she said it was 4-6. She said she could ask, but confirmed 4-6. We're gone! Change your wall or honor what you put on it or cover it! Shame as we were hungry, but that was just stupid for me that they wouldn't honor it!

I had the $2.50 taco specials, one bean, one beef. They were so good I ordered two more with my favourite Mexican beer, Sol. Wait staff and food is excellent, the ambience is that of a sports bar, with two huge TVs and Spanish music...playing loudly over top. I'll be back to try some other interesting menu items but will sit closer to the door. Outside is a bit noisy w/ the traffic from 17th/14th St.
