Merry Christmas everywhere: dishes varieties served around the world
Today is finally the day. The day of all days for small shining children's eyes. But also, for the adults the day has so all kinds of nice things to offer. In addition to time with the family, one thing in particular: insanely delicious and hearty dishes.
Christmas dinner regional
Just by asking around in Germany, you can hardly find a single dish that everyone is satisfied and happy with. What you can do, however, is put together a small top five of the most popular dishes. Here now, not in the respective order, are the five most popular dishes that end up on German plates at Christmas:
- Roast goose or duck
Traditionally, such a roast finds its way onto the plate, if you have ordered your goose or duck in good time beforehand. This is usually accompanied by red cabbage (in some regions also called blue cabbage) and dumplings. Whether these are served as Bohemian dumplings, bread dumplings or potato dumplings is up to each family.
- Roast pork
An alternative to poultry, roast pork also makes a festive meal. Here, too, dumplings and cabbage can be served. But also, rosemary potatoes offer a good side dish here. - Raclette
For those who can wait patiently for their meal and are not afraid to sit together at the table for a certain amount of time, raclette is a fine option. Whether with or without meat, everyone gets their money's worth with raclette because of the many possibilities. - Fondue
Poultry or cheese fondue, vegetarian or not, there are at least a few choices here as well. As a side dish, all kinds of dips, breads, baguettes and vegetables are a real splash of color on the plate here. But as with raclette, the same applies here: this is not for impatient gluttons. - Potato salad with sausages
Simple, easy and quick, this version of Christmas dinner can also be served to the family. Also for all those who are afraid of the big and gigantic substantial meal over the holidays, this is a delicious alternative.
But if you consider not only ours, you will find a much much wider range of different dishes that find their way onto the plates under, next to or in front of the Christmas tree:
- Great Britain:
Similar to us, roast poultry also finds a short-term home on British plates at Christmas. In addition, the British like to enjoy one or the other meat pie and the well-known "Christmas pudding", which, however, unlike puddings here, is not really sweet - it probably does not taste good to everyone.
- Italy & France:
Possibly due to their location by the sea, but perhaps just on a whim. Both countries focus their Christmas dishes on seafood and fish. Here, lobster, oysters, scallops, calamari, cod, but also snails and octopus find their way onto domestic plates. - Israel:
In Israel, you can probably expect a regionally somewhat modified version of the classic Christmas roast. One finds here turkey with a spice mixture consisting of pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. - Cuba:
Although Cuba is far from being known for its good food, this dish is something to behold. It's a rice and bean dish called "Moro y Cristianos," with suckling pig also more often coming to the table. It is accompanied by a Cuban variant of eggnog (perhaps a bit like eggnog). - South Africa:
Last but not least: South Africa. While in this country the snow lies and we celebrate white Christmas, so are on the other side of the world just the warmest or hottest days dawned. So it offers itself here to grill the roast instead of letting it stew in the oven. Whereby the roast is rather a chicken leg or a sausage, but the Braai at Christmas belongs in the south of Africa simply to it.
Merry Christmas and bon appétit!
